चार-धाम यात्रा का प्रथम पड़ाव यमुनोत्री जो  उत्तरकाशी से 131 किमी0 उतर में स्थित है। यमुनोत्री पहुँचने के लिए श्रद्धालुओं को हनुमान चट्टी से 13 किमी0 की दूरी पैदल ही तय करनी पड़ती है। शीतकाल में अत्यधिक ठंड पड़ने से यहाँ बर्फ गिरानी शुरू हो जाती है, जिसके कारण यमुनोत्री धाम के कपाट बंद कर दिये जाते हैं और ग्रीष्मकाल में प्रतिवर्ष बशाख शुक्ल की तृतीया को खोले जाते हैं। सप्तऋषि कुण्ड से करीब 6 किमी0  की दूरी पर खरसाली गाँव है, जहां सोमेश्वर देवालय है। गंगोत्री मंदिर में खरसाली गाँव के पंडित पुजा-अर्जना का कार्य करते हैं। मंदिर के पास गरम कुण्ड है जहां पर श्रद्धालु चाँवल व आलू को कपड़े में बांधकर गरम कुण्ड में कुछ समय के लिए छोड़ देते हैं, कुछ समय बाद यह पक जाता है। मंदिर के एक ओर सूर्य कुण्ड के नजदीक शीला है, जिसको दिव्य शीला के नाम से जाना जाता है। सर्वप्रथम श्रद्धालु इस शीला की पुजा अर्चना करते हैं।
